How often should I wash my hair?
"How often should I wash my hair?" This is a question I hear quite often in the Salon - there is no straight forward answer or formula, everyone’s hair and scalp is different - so how often you wash your hair depends on your own personal choice. But there are a few tips and tricks to help minimise your washing rituals and have your hair care range last that little bit longer! I wash my hair everyday
I mean seriously, every time I hear this response, I picture a farmer in the fields shoveling dirt! If this isn’t you, then there is no need to wash your hair everyday. The main reasoning for this daily grind is due to “Working out daily and getting sweaty” or I hear “I just don’t feel clean without washing my hair” Your hair simply doesn’t get dirty enough within 24hrs to warrant a cleanse and condition, not to mention the styling prior will compromise the integrity of your hair. Washing coloured hair daily without the correct colour safe shampoo and conditioner would also compromise the longevity of your hair colour.
My Tip: Pretend you are washing your hair by wetting it all and just scrub your scalp, minus the shampoo. This scrubbing action will rejuvenate the scalp and the rinsing through with water will freshen your hair cuticle, minimising your product usage. If you are prone to oily scalp, our Aveda Dry Shampoo dusted into the roots instantly refreshes hair by absorbing the oils.
I wash my hair every 3 – 4 days
This is an ideal time frame to wash your hair. By the third day your hair would have built up its natural levels of oils and dirt and perhaps the scent of last night’s dinner too!
My Tip: Make sure you are washing your hair twice. The first shampoo removes all the dirt and the second shampoo actually cleanses your hair. This is why you generally get a better lather on the second shampoo.
-Don’t just dump the shampoo in one spot, make sure you spread the shampoo all over the scalp before you scrub.
-Apply the conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Do not apply the conditioner on the roots. The ends are the oldest parts of your hair and need more conditioning than the roots.
-Use the right Shampoo and Conditioner that is suitable for your hair type. It’s not uncommon to have two alternate shampoo and conditioner families within your shower.
I wash my hair once a week
If you’re a weekly kinda gal, you are probably the envy of all your friends and colleagues. Lorde reportedly washes her hair once every two weeks! If this is you, you are more than likely to have thick hair which doesn’t get too oily. You are mostly likely prone to dry scalp too!
Tip: The Aveda Beautifying composition is a seductively scented oil. It has jojoba oil and a blend of essences, including rosemary and bergamont. Massaging oil onto the head helps the condition of the scalp and hair.
-Massaging oil helps to prevent flakes and dry scalp without the need for a cleanse and condition.
-Spreads the natural oils of the hair, increasing hair luster and vibrancy
- Helps enhance blood circulation in the head and neck area. When the scalp is “tight” from stress, circulation and hair growth are impeded.
So how often you wash your hair and what type of products you use in between is completely up to you. Currently I am a once a fortnight kinda guy, but hey, don’t tell my hairdresser that!
