CURLY HAIR

When it comes to curly hair, stylists are often intimidated by the many varieties of curls and their high-maintenance appearance. Truth be told, cutting and styling curls can take some expertise and practice to get right. Luckily, we have a curly hair pro in our midst - our talented director Nathan was featured on Aveda’s website for National Stylist Appreciation Day as a knowledgeable Aveda artist.

Nathan spoke about how he is a firm believer in the mantra ‘you never stop learning’ - over the course of 17 years in the hairstyling biz, he has learned a thing or two about curly hair. Curls should bring out my guests’ best facial features and compliment their face shape, so each guest requires a personalised cut and style to highlight both their curls and their faces. Important things to pay attention to are layering, all-over length and face-framing length so the whole head shows off the client’s natural curls and makes the look easy to reproduce outside the salon.

Styling curly hair can require a lot of product! Curls can be susceptible to dryness and frizz, so choosing a product that will help tame frizz, boost moisture and hydration is key to healthy-looking, shiny curls. Curly hair loves oil, so Nathan loves to go in on wet curls with a few pumps of Aveda’s Nutriplenish Multi Use Hair Oil. Next, for extra moisture and definition, Nathan uses a good dose of Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer™. The final step before drying includes the star product that keeps curls in place - the Aveda Confixor Liquid Gel. Nathan recommends using a diffuser with your dryer and flipping the hair upside down for extra lift at the roots and tighter curls. Shake your curls out - don’t brush through them! For sky-high volume, flip your hair into a side part. By now you should have gorgeous, glossy curls the ’80s would be envious of!
